Tu 4/25 - B2B Ads Can Be Funny | Doja Cat & Taco Bell | Are Your YouTube Shorts Getting Eyeballs

It's Tuesday, April 25 2023. And it's time to nerd out.

The ad nerds podcast delivers ad industry news every weekday. We are the go to source for people who spend money on advertising, covering Big brands, small businesses, and of course, the latest marketing trends. It's me Spanky Moskowitz, the show's host, and a nearly 40 year bet of the ad industry. I've created campaigns for Budweiser m&ms, Frito. Lay the NFL and NBA, I've created over 100,000 to ADS generating hundreds of billions and client revenue. If you're in or interested in the world of advertising, and want to stay up to date with the latest news. The ad nerds podcast is the perfect place to start.

First digital consultant firm consulting firm globe and nailed it like 100% with their new reinventing consultancy campaign. They poked fun at the old and static business consultants out there with two very funny ads that make you laugh out loud. In one of the films, a worker is compiling 1000 slides slide deck while his colleagues watch in amazement. I don't know about you. I have sat through consulting firms presentations that are endless keynotes, right, the slides just don't seem to stop. So it's pretty funny. In the other film, an office installs new computers with keyboards that have two buttons and only two buttons, copy and paste. Because that's all you really need. Right?

The campaign was developed with creative agency get Windows RAs, and it is absolutely no surprise they won the creativity Awards Best b2b campaign. According to Matthias Lotfollah, gutt, executive creative director and Joaquin cooperia. Chief Creative Officer. The insights provided by clients themselves made them laugh at the sheer ridiculousness of some of the outdated processes in the consulting industry. I've got links to the ads in the podcast show notes, of course.

Now if you're a small business owner, you could do the same thing they did and not have a huge budget to do it. You can create a funny ad that literally connects to a pain point or frustration, your target audience experiences and then just turn it into a light hearted joke. For example, if you're a small coffee shop, and you're competing with larger chains that shall remain nameless, you could create a campaign that makes fun of the complexity of ordering at those big chains. Right they've got endless customization options, weird names, and confusing jargon when it comes to sizes. So you could show a humorous skit of someone struggling to place an order only to be met way by confusion and frustration. Remember, though, the goal of doing this isn't to offend or belittle. But to make your audience laugh and connect with your brand on a personal level.

One of my number one goals when I advertise any of my businesses, is to get my audience laughing. If I can make them laugh, I've won. And so with the right approach, even a small business can use humor to stand out in a very crowded market and build a very loyal customer base.

If you're a small business and you're creating content, you need to include the second largest search engine in your social media arsenal, YouTube, specifically YouTube shorts. Now when I said that I just realized, I don't know if YouTube is now the second largest search engine because there's been a little disruption because of AI right? So it was Google YouTube tick tock, but does it Google YouTube chat GPT tick tock? I don't know. Anyway, I gotta check that out. YouTube shorts is a type of short video that's become very popular, and it's important to know which of your short videos are most interesting to people watching them. So YouTube has a tool called analytic They can help you figure this out. And you can use it to see not only how many times people saw your short videos, but how many times they kept watching them, you can also see who's watching your videos. So to use analytics, go to your YouTube studio account on your computer right now, you can do it on your phone, too, but it's a real pain in the butt. Then choose the analytics tab and look for the shown in feed chart. This is going to show you how many people saw your short videos in their feed. Now you can compare this to how many people saw your video to how many people actually watched it. So if your video has a lot of views, that means people liked it. But if people aren't watching your video all the way through, you might want to try making some stuff that's a little more interesting to your audience. You can also see who's watching your videos by looking at the audience tab in analytics, and you can see things like their age, their gender, what countries they're from.

And but just know if you're a small business owner, don't freak out if you see people from other countries watching your videos. This is organic, right? People watch these and they find them it's discovery, people share things that are funny or entertaining. So don't freak out when you see people from other countries watching your content. But by using Analytics, you can learn more about what makes good YouTube short videos and the ones that are working will tell you what to make more of.

Coming up. Every winner needs a button and a petition goes viral to solve this age old problem. The last 30 It's time for you great at running your business. Well how about marketing it? Last year Taco Bell and dosha cat teamed up to create a successful influencer marketing campaign that won Best Use of Tik Tok award at the Ad Age creativity awards. But it started with doji dosha Kat expressing her genuine indignation at the disappearance of Taco Bell's Mexican pizza. Now, I myself am not a huge Taco Bell fan. That said, I love their Mexican pizza. Like it is truly amazing. So this led to a very slight partnership between the two with dosha pet cat playing the role of an antihero endorser, who antagonized Taco Bell until it brought the menu item back. The strategic platform for the campaign was devised by Deutsch LA who saw an opportunity in doshas tweets about the missing item. Tick tock played a crucial role in the campaign with Dojo writing a Mexican pizza jingle and releasing it on the platform.

Taco Bell eventually produced an entire tic tock musical about the Mexican pizza stock. Give me my pizza. But campaign was a success with Taco Bell bringing back the Mexican pizza and doja cat announcing the news on stage at Coachella. The jury for the ad creativity awards praised the campaign for setting the bar for entertaining content that feels native and organic to the platform. One of the jurors stated this is exactly how brands should be thinking about tick tock. The success of Taco Bell and dosha Katz campaign show the power of influencer marketing and the potential of Tik Tok as a platform for engaging with audiences.

Broadcast as consumers we've all known about this problem for us long as we can remember, hot dogs are typically sold in packs of 10. While hot dog buns are sold in packs of eight, well Heinz my personal favorite ketchup brand and the only condiment that belongs in a hot dog in my opinion, decided to turn our global hot dog and bun ratio problem into a humorous and engaging campaign. Heinz worked with agency rethink, to launch the hot dog pact, a call to action for both hotdogs and buns to be sold in packs of 10. To generate support for their cause, Heinz created a petition on change.org. The petition quickly gained traction and grabbed 15,000 signatures within the first 24 hours. The campaign quickly caught fire and pop culture with mentions everywhere from morning TV to late night shows. And in a surprising twist, wonderbread answered the call by producing 10 packs of hotdog buns. Heinz hotdog pack campaign has successfully achieved its goal of getting the same number of hotdogs and buns in packages.

Now, the campaign itself was a hit on social media with a lot of people finding the issue relatable and amusing. So how can you utilize or execute this in your business? If you have a mom and pop donut shop, you could do something super similar to this. Imagine creating content around the missing part of every donut and how the holes shouldn't be sold separately. Rather, holes should be included with each donut. Remember, Heinz did this in a really simple way. And you can do the same thing. You don't need a lot of money to execute something like this. You just need a couple of ideas and a smartphone. Or you can always create an online petition.

AI and the NFL come together this week. The 2023 NFL draft takes place in Kansas City starting Thursday. And the generative AI artwork that's going to be featured at the event was created by mid journey, a popular text to image AI tool in collaboration with AI artists, Adrian curial.

The NFL and its social production company and agency formula developed a 3d set to display the artwork. The images created by the mid journey bot were based on text prompts fed into the bots platform via discord. For those of you who've been playing around with mid journey you know how this works. The bot then generated the numerous details such as the city identity, lighting and mood, and you know, the rest anyway, from these variants the 500 images the NFL selected a single version and may just minor edits for the final artwork. And the artwork is designed to commemorate the beginning of draft picks journey through professional football. At the event.
